County Government: Enter Your State, Here

The little textbook about North Carolina government gave a nice synopsis of the unique role counties play: whereas municipalities manage proximity -- like unique issues stemming from citizens living close together in a town --, counties provide basic services to all citizens as delegated or mandated by the state.  It sounds like the state affects my life through the county I reside in.  Thus, the county courthouse: where a district attorney and judge sit, at a place called the county seat, yet wholly appointed and employed by the state.
