Dear Friend, "What is Philosophy?"

A friend emailed me an easy question today: "What is philosophy? ... is it a set of beliefs a person holds and [is] willing to defend?"  I responded with a few words that began with: There is a traditional definition of philosophy but broadly speaking -- and I mean brushing with broad strokes of a paint brush -- there are two kinds of philosophy: I) skeptical and II) analytical

Disclaimers:

  1. "skeptical philosophy", as I defined it and as I intended my reader to understand it, does not mean "skepticism"
  2. "analytical philosophy", as I defined it and as I intended my reader to understand it, does not necessarily mean "analytic philosophy"
  3. "traditional philosophy", as I defined it, includes "skepticism", "analytic philosophy" and other terms like "epistemology" as used in philosophy contexts
